Unexpected Field Trip Feelings

Today was Victoria’s first field trip with her K3 class at the elementary school. I had the day free and was glad I could accompany her on her trip. We were in for a beautifully, warm day and that was definitely a plus because we would be outside for most of the day. The class was to be visiting the animal exhibits at the State Fair and would be eating lunch and playing at a nice local park near the fairgrounds. I anticipated that it would be a fun day. What I didn’t anticipate was some of the feelings I would experience during the day.
It all started when one of the parents of a kid in Victoria’s class backed out of accompanying him on his field trip. The child was born with some physical handicaps due to health issues he had while in utero. The child is from a recently broken home and there is no stability in his life at present, even down to where he spends each night. The little boy is so well behaved and is one of the sweetest children. My heart not only broke today because no parent or relative went with him on his trip, but that he is constantly being bounced from one home to another home.
After all of us got on the school bus, we eventually left for the fair.
