Heather was first exposed to music by her parents. At 5-years-old, Heather was singing solos and trios with her sister and brother in their church. Growing up in church also allowed many opportunities for Heather to sing in choirs and ensembles.
The exposure to music continued to expand; Heather became part of show choirs and madrigal groups in high school. It was during this time that Heather accepted Christ as her Savior and felt a deep desire to serve the Lord through her musical gifts and talents.
While attending college, Heather took vocal lessons for the first time in her life and she toured in the University Of Mobile’s top music group, Vision. She also began to have opportunities to record solos and backup vocals on various projects for Christian music companies such as Integrity Music and WholeHearted Worship.
After graduating from the University Of Mobile with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Performance, Heather felt a call to use music to minister to the local church. She toured the country full-time with vocal group, Wings of Morning, and was the group’s music director. After Heather finished her touring season with Wings, she began teaching private voice lessons.
In addition to her part-time career as a vocal instructor, Heather worked full-time at Integrity Music. While at Integrity Music, Heather had opportunities to lead worship at company-wide worship services on a regular basis, as well as sing backup vocals for various Integrity worship artists (Don Moen, Paul Baloche, David Baroni, Jamie Harvill, Jason Breland, etc.). Heather had the privilege of learning how to lead worship under the most talented worship leaders in the country. Heather’s original songs were pitched to producers for numerous Integrity projects and during this time in her life she continued to sharpen her songwriting skills. Heather worked for Integrity Music for over 10 years.
Even though Heather worked part-time as a vocal instructor and full-time at Integrity Music, she continued to give concerts and also lead worship at women’s retreats and banquets. As her musical opportunities continued to increase, she felt led to record her first CD project. Heather’s freshman album, Wonder, was released in 1990. The album was filled with original songs and produced by Dove award-winning producer, Peter Kipley.
God reunited Heather with her college sweetheart, Mark Messick, in 2001 and they married on May 4, 2002. Heather has served with her husband, Mark, at First Baptist North Mobile for over 11 years where he is the Discipleship Pastor. They have been blessed with three little girls; Elyssa, Natalie and Victoria. Victoria (their youngest) was born with Down syndrome and required open-heart surgery when she was just 7-weeks-old.
As the mother of a child with special needs, God has opened doors for Heather to share her testimony at churches and women’s events. Heather has traveled the country as a featured guest speaker for over 5 years now and as a worship leader/vocal artist for over 20 years.
Heather penned a special song in 2008 about Victoria. The song reminds all who hear it that God did not make a mistake when he gave the Messicks their little Victoria. The song was given the title, “She Is God’s Child.” There was such a request for “Victoria’s song” that Heather recorded a second album in 2010. The album, Meet Us Here, includes many of Heather’s original songs and also includes some of her favorite worship tunes.
Heather currently teaches Commercial Voice at the University of Mobile where she has been an adjunct staff member since 2005. Heather continues to tour as a speaker and singer and records regularly as a studio vocalist for Christian Music company, Brentwood Benson, and other local studios.
From her youth, Heather has been shaped by God’s hand. Through that refining process, her desire has always been to encourage those on an unexpected journey in life. She has had the privilege of ministering to thousands of people with her crystal-clear voice and transparent personality. She is a refreshing presence and a clear voice of hope in the God who created us.
